You’re Invited: Virtual Big Game Banquet!

We hope you are all staying safe and taking care. Although we can’t host our traditional in-person Big Game Banquet and Homecoming events this year, we will be hosting two virtual Zoom panels featuring Daily staffers past and present as opportunities for our community to reconnect during this time. We hope to see you there!

Panel #1: Covering the 2020 Election

  • Date and time: Nov. 17th from 5-6pm PST
  • Event description: Tune in to hear from former Daily staffers Toluse Olorunnipa ’08 (Washington Post, CNN), Ryan Mac ’11 (Buzzfeed News), Mini Racker ’18 (National Journal), and Hannah Knowles ’19 (Washington Post) on their experiences covering election politics during Covid-19.

Panel #2: The Daily During Covid-19

  • Date and time: Nov. 19th from 5-6pm PST
  • Event description: Curious how The Daily has adapted to the challenges brought on by Covid-19? Hear from current Daily staffers across various editorial sections on how the pandemic has changed the way we work and how we’re thinking about coverage.

To learn more about our panelists and to RSVP to either event, please click here. Zoom details will be sent out shortly before each event.

Executive Update

Dear alumni community,

Stanford’s truncated fall quarter is nearing its end, but The Daily’s work continues at full steam. Almost every aspect of student life has transitioned to the digital sphere — students take classes online, seek community in a digitized campus and virtual dorm and explore their interests in online student organizations. On campus, COVID-19 cases have ticked upward — most student cases are confined to athletics circles, though a substantial proportion of the broader on-campus community may be shirking weekly testing duties, and reported violations of public health guidelines exceed 100.

The question on everyone’s minds: Is Stanford ready to bring frosh and sophomores back to campus in January?

This month the University yielded to pressure to rename Jordan Hall, which honored prominent eugenicist and Stanford’s founding president David Starr Jordan. Administrators have not fully acceded to demands to departmentalize Stanford’s African and African American Studies program. Hoover fellow Scott Atlas, who has espoused contrarian views on COVID-19, continues to exert influence over White House coronavirus policy, prompting consideration of the institution’s relationship to the University as well as more widespread consternation.

At The Daily, we’ve welcomed a cohort of 200+ new writers in small groups under the guidance of experienced staff “mentors,” and we’ve worked out the kinks of an all-online daily production model. While our content sections churn out enough content to stock our daily digest, our project teams have taken on important production efforts of their own: Our data team designed a COVID-19 tracker for our homepage, our cartoons section has become prolific in its visual reflections of life on and off campus and our podcasters continue producing feature episodes and other engaging audio content.

Continued uncertainty about the college experience and the state of the nation and world has only reaffirmed us in our drive to bring clarity to the Stanford community and to foster robust discourse on salient social, political and ethical issues. We want to extend our immense gratitude for your continued support. We look forward to seeing many of you at our virtual Big Game banquet this month!

Respectfully,

Charlie Curnin and Jackie O’Neil

Editor-in-Chief and Executive Editor, Vol. 258
